Prof. LU Ke Receives the 2019 Acta Materialia Gold Medal

Prof. LU Ke, Director of the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL), has been honored the 2019 Acta Materialia Gold Medal from the Acta Materialia, Incorporated. The award recognizes the outstanding achievements of Prof. Lu to materials science. The Gold Medal will be presented during the 2019 TMS Spring Meeting and Exhibition in San Antonio, Texas.

As a leading researcher in the field of nanostructured materials, Prof. Lu contributed to the advancement of materials science and engineering with world-class, trend-setting research. His highly cited research covers nanostructured metals, amorphous alloys, and thin films, dealing with thermodynamic and kinetics of processing and phase transformation, stability and melting, mechanical and tribological properties, physical and chemical properties, etc.

His major scientific accomplishments include: (i) discovery of nano-twinned materials and development of nano-twin strengthening methodology; (ii) development of surface nanocrystallization technology and discovery of unique behaviors of gradient nano-grained structures in metals and alloys, and (iii) the stabilization and plastic deformation of nano-grained metals at extreme sizes.

Prof. Lu is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2003), the World Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries (2004), the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2005), and National Academy of Engineering of USA (2018). Prof. Lu has received numerous awards from around the world including the National Nature Science Award, the CAS Nature Science Award, Hasiguti Foundation Prize, the Third World Academy TWNSO Technology Prize, ISMANAM'98 Gold Medal and Junior Scientist Award, SCI Citation Classic Award (ISI), Ho-Leung-Ho-Lee Technology Science Award, and Humboldt Research Award.

The Acta Materialia Gold Medal was established by Acta Materialia, Inc. in 1973 as an international award to recognize leadership in materials research. Acta Materialia, Inc. represents 33 professional societies worldwide in publishing two international journals and in other activities supporting the materials profession.
