Research of the advanced materials for water purification is focused on functional materials with unique properties for purifying water of harmful microbials and contaminants. The goal is to develop and understand the materials science basis for relating unique properties of water purification materials to their chemistry, synthesis, processing, and structure. Strong emphasis is placed on sun-light driven antimicrobial materials for disinfecting water, nanomaterials for removing heavy metals from water, catalytic and photocatalytic materials for reduction of anionic species and emerging pollutants in water.
